SUMMARY:GBCC East Galway Heritage Cycle
DESCRIPTION:Cycling has been a part of rural life in Galway for decades. There were more bike on the roads than cars in the 1950s. While the roads may have changed to accommodate the cars\, the old roads\, the old routes and destinations can still be found. The Sunday cyclist of the 1940s or 50s would not have been thinking about PBs and local segment challenges\, but would have picked up information about crops\, stock\, and local gossip. \nGalway Bay Cycling Club (GBCC) wishes to bring its members and friends on a trip from the city around the old roads\, recreating the slow pace and incident. This event will re-create the cycling wandering of 1950’s leisure cyclist\, if she/he started in Claregalway\, a hill climb at Abbeyknockmoy (stopping at St. Patrick’s graveyard and 17th century carved stone) and on to Our lady’s Well\, Athenry for refreshments\, before returning to Claregalway. \nThe 55km cycle will be designed for new-to-bike participants\, but will include a hill to climb\, and a view to see. The commentary on the landscape and historical stops will be led by Colm Murray and Stephen O’Connell of GBCC\, with help from friends

DESCRIPTION:A fun and inclusive cycling event at Clough GAA Grounds designed to encourage new and returning cyclists of all ages and abilities. \nThe event will include an accessible bike showcase in partnership with Laois Sports Partnership (subject to availability)\, allowing participants to view and try accessible bicycles suitable for different abilities. \nThe newly installed bike repair station at the GAA grounds will be promoted through a practical bike maintenance workshop covering tyre inflation\, puncture repair\, brake checks and bike safety basics. \nA community Cycle Gear Swap & Donation Station will also be held\, encouraging residents to donate or exchange unwanted but usable cycling items such as helmets\, stabilisers\, knee pads\, elbow pads\, high-visibility gear\, pumps and children’s bikes. This will support affordability\, re-use and sustainable active travel. \nTarget Group: Families\, children\, older adults\, people with disabilities\, beginner cyclists\, returning cyclists\nDistance: Optional short supervised spins within GAA grounds / safe local loop (approx. 1km)\nOpen to Public: Yes – fully open community event\nOther Information: Family friendly\, beginner friendly\, sustainability focused\, donations welcome in advance.”
