Visit to Apparition Chapel, Knock Shrine, Knock, Co. Mayo

Pope Francis will visit the Apparition Chapel at the Knock Shrine on the morning of Sunday 26 August at 9:45am. Information on Transport options is available below.

If you have a ticket for the Knock event, you will be able to use a free bus shuttle from Claremorris station to the Knock shrine.

An Garda Síochána and the relevant Local Authorities have finalised their list of road closures in and around the Knock area for the Papal Visit. 

Transport Information

  • Bus

    Bus Éireann

    Knock is served by Bus Éireann routes 440 (Athlone – Knock, Westport – Castlebar – Knock), 421 (Swinford – Kiltimagh– Knock) and 64 (Galway – Knock – Sligo).

    In order to cater for anticipated demand additional services will operate on these routes on the 26th August, space will be limited.

    Enhanced Bus Éireann/Expressway services for Knock on August 26th

    Route 440

    Ballina-Swinford-Kiltimagh-Knock-Claremorris

    • 06:55hrs service from Westport to Knock only – serving all stops to Knock
    • 06:45hrs service from Athlone to Knock – serving all stops to Knock

    Both services to return directly after the event.

    Route 421

    A 06:05 service will operate from Ballina to Claremorris via Knock returning after the event. 

    Expressway

    Route 64 will operate additional services from Galway at 06:00 am, Sligo at 06:00am and additional departures from Knock at 13:00 to both locations. Customers can walk from the N17 bus park to the Shrine, roughly 1.5km.

    Route 52 will connect to Claremorris train station to the free shuttle.

    The 0600 from Ballina & 0700 from Galway will arrive into Claremorris at 07:25 & 08:45 respectively.

    Online pre-booking is advised for these services. 

    Shuttle buses

    Shuttle buses are expected to operate from 06.30 to 14.30 from Claremorris train station.

    The shuttles will be operated by Bus Éireann and will carry Irish Rail and Expressway customers from Claremorris to Knock – a 15 minute journey. Anyone with a valid Papal ticket can use the shuttles.

    Bus Feda will operate an early morning service from Donegal and Sligo to Knock on the 26th August for the Papal Visit.

    Michael Friel Coaches will be providing services to Papal visit at Knock Shine on 26th August.

    Knock Shine pick points will be:

    Curran Coaches

    Curran Coaches will be operating buses to Knock Shrine, departing from Glencolmcille, Carrick, Kilcar, Killybegs, Dunkineely, Donegal Town and other pick up points on route.

  • Rail

    Train transport to Knock on 26th August will be extremely limited. Those wishing to travel must book a ticket in advance at www.irishrail.ie this includes Department of Social Protection pass holders and annual ticket holders. If you do not have an advance booking you will not be permitted to travel.

    Limited services will operate from Westport, Ballina & Athlone with a bus connection at Claremorris for Knock. Full details of these services will be available soon on www.irishrail.ie
