Online survey launched ahead of rickshaw legislation

01.8.17

The NTA has today launched an online survey seeking the views of the public and key stakeholders in relation to the operation of rickshaws in Ireland.

The survey will, amongst other things, seek the views of:

  • public users in relation to their experience of rickshaws, including charges and any issues they may have experienced;
  • existing rickshaw owners in relation to the scale and type of their rental operations;
  • rickshaw operators and drivers in relation to their work experience and methodology; and
  • all members of the public on if and how rickshaw operation might be regulated.

This preparatory work and research will inform the drafting of new legislation in this area.

NTA Deputy CEO Hugh Creegan said: “Earlier this year, Minister for Transport Shane Ross asked the NTA to seek the views of the public and key stakeholders in relation to the operation of rickshaws in Ireland.

“The regulation of rickshaws has been a matter of public interest for some time now and the information we gather in this process will bring some clarity to bear on how the relationship with regulatory authorities will be defined into the future.

“We would encourage anybody who has an interest in the area to share their views so that we can work towards the most appropriate regulatory regime.”

There are 5 sections in the survey:

1) Operator questions – only asked of those who rent rickshaws to others
2) Driver questions – only asked of those who drive rickshaws
3) Passenger questions – only asked of those who have been a passenger in a rickshaw
4) Regulation questions – only asked of those who have stated that they think rickshaw operation should be regulated
5) Profile questions – the age and county of each respondent

The survey is intuitive, easy to navigate, and very user friendly. The pages are navigable backwards to allow people to change their minds or “have a look” as desired. The majority of the questions are optional.

The survey is seeking the views of members of the public, organisations, rickshaw owners as well as rickshaw drivers. However, representative organisations and bodies are encouraged to provide any further, considered submissions directly via rickshaws@nationaltransport.ie, a dedicated NTA email address.

Following the review, the NTA will consider the responses received and formally respond to the Department.

The NTA is commencing its review by means of a public survey via an online questionnaire.

Members of the public can provide their opinion by completing an Online Rickshaw Questionnaire on the NTA website: www.nationaltransport.ie

The closing date is Monday, 25 September 2017.
