Christmas Travel Tips: 

Many TFI operators are putting on additional services to get you out and about this festive season. Whether you’re shopping or socialising be sure to plan your journey in advance.

Travelling in Dublin: 

The TFI 90 minute fare allows you to travel on Dublin City Bus (operated by Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland), Luas, and most DART and commuter rail services for just €2.00 for adults, €1.00 for young adults (19-25) and students, and 65 cent for children using your TFI Leap Card!

Public Transport Service Arrangements

The following Bus Éireann services will operate over the Christmas and New Year period.

  • Christmas Eve 24th Dec: All services operate as normal with last departures from termini at 9 PM.
  • Christmas Day 25th Dec: No services will operate.
  • St. Stephen’s Day 26th Dec: Sunday timetables will operate with most routes commencing at 9 AM with a number of exemptions (further details available on the Bus Éireann website:
    • Cork City will operate a full Sunday timetable except for Route 220 which will commence at 7 AM.
    • Carlow Town Services CW1 and CW2 will operate Sunday timetables with routes commencing at 8:20 AM. 
  • 27th Dec – 31st Dec: Normal timetables will operate.
  • New Year’s Day 1st Jan: Sunday timetables will operate.
  • 2nd Jan: Normal timetables will resume.

The following Dublin Bus services will operate over the Christmas and New Year period.

  • Friday 5th and Saturday 6th Dec: Services will operate as normal with full Nitelink and 24 hour services in operation.
  • Thurs 11th – Sun 13th Dec: Services will operate as normal with full Nitelink and 24 hour services in operation.
  • Thurs 18th – Mon 21st Dec: Services will operate as normal with full Nitelink and 24 hour services in operation.
  • Christmas Eve 24th Dec: Saturday services will operate on all routes with last departures at approx. 9:00 PM.
  • Christmas Day 25th Dec: No service will operate.
  • St. Stephen’s Day 26th Dec: Sunday service will operate. Nitelink will not operate.
  • Sat 27th Dec: Saturday services will operate with full Nitelink services in operation.
  • Sun 28th Dec: Services will operate as normal with full Nitelink services in operation.
  • Mon 29th and Tue 30th Dec: Saturday services will operate, with extra journeys added during the morning peak hours. A full 24-hour services will operate. Nitelink services will not operate
  • New Year’s Eve Wed 31st: A Saturday service will operate. A full Nitelink and 24-hour services will operate.
  • New Year’s Day Thurs 1st of January: A Sunday service will operate and 24-hour services will operate. Nitelink services will not operate.
  • Friday 2nd Jan: Normal services resume.

The following Go-Ahead Ireland services will operate over the Christmas and New Year period.

  • Christmas Eve 24th Dec: All services will operate as normal up to 9 PM.
  • Christmas Day 25th Dec: No services will operate. 
  • St. Stephen’s Day 26th Dec: Services will commence at 9 AM and operate to a Public Holiday timetable.
  • 27th Dec – 30th Dec: Normal services will operate. 
  • New Year’s Eve 31st Dec: Normal services will operate. 
  • New Year’s Day 1st Jan: Services will operate to a Sunday/Public Holiday timetable. 
  • 2nd Jan: Normal services will resume.

Iarnród Éireann customers on all routes are advised to check times before travelling, and to book Intercity travel in advance at busiest times.

 Late night services from Dublin City Centre 

Iarnród Éireann will operate late-night special services every Thursday to Saturday beginning 4th December and finishing 20th of December. 

  • Thursday 4th, Friday 5th and Saturday 6th December.
  • Thursday 11th, Friday 12th and Saturday 13th December. 
  • Thursday 18th, Friday 19th and Saturday 20th December. 

The below special services will be running:

  • 12:30 AM and 01:30 AM from Pearse serving all stations to Howth.
  • 12:35 AM and 01:35 AM from Connolly serving all stations to Greystones.
  • 12:40 AM and 01:40 AM from Pearse serving Tara St, Connolly, and all stations from Howth Junction to Dundalk.
  • 12:27 AM and 02:10 AM from Pearse serving all stations to Maynooth.
  • 11:55 PM and 01:58 AM from Pearse serving all stations to Drumcondra, and all stations from ParkWest to Kildare.

Rail service alterations 24th December 2025 to 5th January 2026 inclusive:

Christmas Eve Wednesday 24th December 2025 

  • Weekday InterCity service but with cancellations and alterations on certain routes, with last services between 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM approx. 
  • DART and Commuter will operate a Saturday service with last services between 7:25 PM and 9 PM approx.  
  • Phoenix Park Tunnel Commuter (Grand Canal Dock/Hazelhatch and Newbridge) route will operate a reduced service until 7:45 PM approx. 
  • Cork Commuter will operate a Saturday service until 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM approx.

Christmas Day Thursday 25th December 2025 & St Stephen’s Day Friday 26th December 2025: No train services operating on any routes. 

Saturday 27th December 2025: Revised and reduced InterCity services, check times before travel. 

Sunday 28th December 2025: Normal Sunday service will operate with the following cancellations: 

  • 04:00 PM Connolly/Sligo 
  • 05:05 PM Sligo/Connolly 

Monday 29th and Tuesday 30th December 2025

 New Year’s Eve Wednesday 31stDecember 2025 

  • Weekday InterCity service but with cancellations and alterations on certain routes.
  • Saturday service on DART and Commuter routes, with additional DART services to/from Howth and Dun Laoghaire for fireworks displays taking place at 7:00 PM.
  • Revised Phoenix Park Tunnel (Grand Canal Dock/Hazelhatch to Newbridge) services. 
  • Cork Commuter will operate a Saturday service. 
  • Additional late-night services will operate after Dublin New Year’s Eve events: 
    • 01:30 AM and 02:30 AM from Dublin Pearse serving all stations to Howth 
    • 01:35 AM and 02:35 AM  from Dublin Connolly serving all stations to Greystones 
    • 01:40 AM and 02:40 AM  from Dublin Pearse, serving Tara St, Connolly, and all stations from Howth Junction to Dundalk.

Be sure to check the timetables for Luas services over Christmas and the New Year period.

Night Luas trams will run until the early hours of the morning on the Red and Green Lines on Friday 12th December, Saturday 13th December, Friday 19th December, Saturday 20th December, and Tuesday 31st December (New Year’s Eve). Night Luas will operate in both directions, collecting passengers at all stops on the Green Line and Red Line; however, the last Night Luas trams will only run Westbound from The Point Luas Stop on the Red Line and Southbound from Broombridge on the Green Line. 

Red Line  

Services will operate every 30 minutes:  

  • Inbound from 12:30 AM and Outbound from 01:00 AM.
  • Inbound services alternate between Tallaght and Saggart origins. Last tram will leave The Point at 03:00. 01:30 AM and 02:30 AM services go to Saggart. 

Green Line  

Services will operate every 30 minutes from 00:06 (Broombridge) and 00:20 (Brides Glen). The last tram in both directions at St. Stephen’s Green is 03:00 AM.

  •  Wednesday 24th Christmas Eve: Red and Green line services commence at 5:30 AM with last service at 8:00 PM.
  • Thursday 25th Christmas Day: No services operating.
  • Friday 26th December: Services commence at 09:00 AM then operate to a reduced Sunday timetable. 
  • Saturday 27th December: Will operate a Saturday timetable.
  • Sunday 28th December: Will operate a Sunday timetable. 
  • Monday 29th and Tuesday 30thWill operate a Saturday timetable.
  • New Year’s Eve 31st December:  Saturday operating hours. Night Luas will operate with last tram leaving the city centre on the Red Line at 03:00 AM and Green Line at 3:30 AM.

Taxi tips for the holiday season 2025

Travelling by taxi or hackney this festive season? Here are some helpful hints to keep you moving:

  • Plan ahead: The festive season is particularly busy for all public transport services. Check out TFI bus, train and Luas service information before you travel If you choose to travel by taxi or hackney, be sure to book ahead if you can.
  • Maximum fares: Travelling by hackney? Don’t forget to agree your fare in advance. Travelling by taxi? The taximeter shows the maximum taxi fare payable (apart from tolls). To get a cost range for your journey, check out the TFI Taxi Fare Estimator.
  • Extra fees: If you choose to book your taxi on an App, you may be charged separate fees for using that booking service. Shop around to get the best value!
  • Cash or Card? The choice is yours! All taxi drivers must take card payments (with no extra charges).
  • Receipts: Be sure to ask for your taxi receipt and don’t forget to look before you tap. Find out more information on your taxi fare before travel.
  • Safety: All licenced taxis have authorised ‘Taxi/Tacsaí’ roof and door signage.   • Christmas Eve 24th Dec: Normal service up to approx. 9 PM. 
  • Christmas Day 25th Dec: No service will operate. 
  • St. Stephen’s Day 26th Dec: A Sunday service will operate from 9 AM. 
  • Sat 27th – Tue 30th Dec: Normal scheduled service. 
  • New Year’s Eve Wed 31st: Normal service up to approx. 9 PM.
