Four New Fare Zones in Dublin and surrounding areas from April 28th:

  • There are four Leap fare zones for Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail services, which cover an approximate 50km radius from Dublin city centre.
  • New prepaid tickets are available for purchase using the TFI Leap Top-up App.
  • Most fares in Zone 1: TFI Dublin remain unchanged.
  • Bus Éireann fare changes are planned for June 2025.

Zone 1 (TFI Dublin)

  • The TFI 90 minute fare in Zone 1 remains unchanged at €2 for Adult, €1 for Young Adult/Student and €0.65 for Child Leap Cards.

The above Leap fares allow any combination of Dublin City Bus service (operated by Dublin Bus and Go-Ahead Ireland/ Luas/ DART and Commuter Rail travel within Zone 1.

If your Zone 1 Dublin City Bus service crosses into Zone 2, both the daily/weekly cap and the TFI 90-minute fare apply. Some of these services include bus routes: 33, 33a, 33x, 65, 65a, L1, L2, L3, X1 and X2.

Commuter Zones 2, 3 and 4

You can buy zonal train tickets using the Leap Top-Up App.

  • Zone 2 covers areas including Gormanston, Skerries, Kilcock, Sallins & Naas, Greystones. and Kilcoole.
  • Zone 3 covers areas including Drogheda, Enfield, Newbridge and Wicklow Town.
  • Zone 4 includes areas such as Kildare Town and Rathdrum.

Adult Leap Card users need to have a minimum balance of €2.50 on their TFI Leap Card to travel on Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail services.

You can continue travelling within Zone 1 for free if you travel from Zones 2, 3 or 4 and tap-on again in Zone 1 within 90 minutes of your first tap-on.

Leap Tickets

Zonal tickets are available to load onto your Leap Card using the Leap Top-up App.

  • Zone 1 has monthly tickets available for Adult, Young Adult/Student and Child Leap Cards. Annual tickets are available for adult personalised leap cards only.
  • Zones 2, 3 and 4 have Leap 24-hour, 7-day and monthly tickets available for Adult, Young Adult/Student and Child Leap Cards. Annual tickets are also available for adults only. Prepaid tickets to travel to Zone 1, from Zones 2, 3 or 4, include free travel on Luas, TFI Dublin City Bus and rail services within Zone 1.

Important information

  • The TFI 90-minute fare applies to all routes across the Dublin City Bus Network, including those that travel from Zone 1 to Zone 2.
  • From 28th April, if travelling entirely within Zone 1 and you are an adult, you must have a minimum balance of €1.00 on your Leap Card before you commence your rail journey.
  • From 28th April you can tap-on to pay for travel at all rail stations in Zones 1, 2, 3 or 4.
  • If travelling to or from Zones 2, 3 or 4 and you are an adult, you must have a minimum balance of €2.50 on your Leap Card before you commence your rail journey.
  • Monthly tickets are currently available to buy through the Leap website. Monthly tickets are available to buy using the TFI Leap Top-up App.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most fares in Zone 1 remain unchanged. The 90-minute fare is unchanged. Single mode Leap caps have been withdrawn and the multimode Leap cap has been reduced significantly. The multimode cap allows you travel on any combination of Dublin City Bus/ Luas/ DART and Commuter Rail within Zone 1 at a capped price of:

  • €6 per day for Adult, €3 for Young Adult/Student and €1.95 for Child Leap Cards.
  • €24 per week (Monday to Sunday) for adult, €12 for Young Adult/Student and €7.80 for Child Leap Cards.

If you already have a monthly or annual ticket it will continue to work as normal until it’s time to buy a new ticket.
The new ticket options have been simplified so you can buy a 30 day or annual ticket using the Leap Top Up App, or at www.leapcard.ie and load a ticket on your Leap Card. The price for a 30 day ticket for all eligible services in Zone 1 is €96 and annual ticket is €960.
The new monthly and annual Taxsaver tickets are available to order now for tickets valid from June 1st onwards for customers whose employers participate in the Taxsaver Scheme. Your employer must purchase a monthly or annual Taxsaver ticket on your behalf for you to avail of tax savings. More information is available at Taxsaver.ie.

Yes, the TFI 90 minute fare as well as Zone 1 daily/weekly Leap capping applies to all routes across the TFI Dublin city bus network, including those operating in Zone 2. 30 day and annual Zone 1 tickets also include all routes across the TFI Dublin city bus network, including those operating in Zone 2. The TFI 90 minute fare, fare caps and tickets do not apply to Bus Éireann or Go-Ahead Ireland (Dublin to Kildare) commuter bus services.

Single Leap fares from rail stations in Zone 2 to City Centre are €3.90 for adult, and €1.95 for young adult, student and child. Daily, 7 day, 30 day or annual tickets can also be loaded onto your Leap Card that allow unlimited travel for their period of validity. For an interim period, customers in Zone 2 can buy a cheaper weekly ticket for €32 (Adult) and €16 (Young Adult / Child).

While the number of customers affected by this is relatively low, NTA intends to assess the feasibility of the introduction of a Leap Card zonal ticket for journeys that begin in zone 2, 3 or 4, but that don’t include travel to or through the Zone 1. If it is decided to proceed with these tickets following the assessment, it is likely to take several months to implement.
