Car Free Day - take the tram - LUAS

Car free Dublin city centre, Limerick, Cork, Galway

Part of Dublin city centre will go car free on Monday September 22, as part of European Mobility Week.  (To be confirmed if something similar is planned for 2025)

Dublin City Council would like to remind the public that Car Free Day is back!

The European Mobility Week 2025 will take place from 16 to 22 September 2025, culminating in the popular Car-Free Day.
The overarching theme of “Mobility for Everyone“, which aims to promote sustainable urban mobility and encourage behavioral change towards active mobility and public transport. Local authorities are encouraged to use this week to implement innovative planning measures and gather public feedback.

As part of European Mobility Week 2024, Car Free Day returned to the city September 22nd from 11am-4pm.  (To be confirmed if something similar is planned for 2025)

The streets of Custom House Quay were taken over with cycling skills workshops, games, live entertainment and an outdoor cinema amongst many other activities, as it closes to motorised traffic.

Car Free Day is hosted as the culmination to European Mobility Week, an annual event by the European Commission for Sustainable Urban Mobility. Each year there is a different theme and this year is focusing on designated spaces for citizens to congregate and enjoy their environment in a more community focused and sustainable way. With 70% of Europeans living in urban areas, Car Free Day is encouraging the conversations and demonstrations on the importance of cultivating these spaces within our urban environments.

Limerick: in 2024 celebrated European Car Free Day on 22 Sept, O’Connell Street in Limerick city centre from its junction with Sarsfield Street to Roches Street will be a pedestrian and bus only zone from 11am until 2pm.  (To be confirmed if something similar is planned for 2025)

Cork : In 2023, Cork city has had its first car free afternoon for more than 20 years, on Car-free day, on Sep 23rd with all vehicles – apart from buses and taxis – banned from the city centre.  (To be confirmed if something similar is planned for 2025)

Galway: Galway City Council will be a participant again this year with the temporary closure to private cars on Foster Street to Eglington Street. The closure will be in place from 10am to 2pm and advance signage and media communication will be engaged. (to be confirmed).

Waterford: Waterford City ran an ‘Activity Street’ on Car-Free Day, September 22nd 2024. To be confirmed if something similar is planned for 2025.
