The National Transport Authority (NTA) has today begun fieldwork for the 2025 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS), a key step in understanding how people across Ireland travel in their daily lives.
The nationwide survey aims to gather insight into Ireland’s travel habits, providing the NTA with the essential statistics to plan and improve public transport services to meet the evolving needs of the population, both urban and rural.
Over 4,000 households will be randomly selected and contacted by phone between mid-September and early December by research experts at Ipsos B&A, who have been commissioned by the NTA to carry out the survey. Participants will be asked to complete a short household questionnaire and a travel diary, which they’ll return by post.
Households will be selected using random digit dialling of mobile and landline phone numbers. Calls will come directly from Ipsos B&A representatives.
Questions will cover topics including the number of trips taken, the trip origin and destination and the mode of transport used.
All responses will be anonymous and handled in line with best practices in survey research and data protection.
This is the sixth National Household Travel Survey since its launch in 2012. The data plays a key role in shaping national policies such as the National Sustainable Mobility Policy and the Climate Action Plan 2024.
Ipsos B&A’s staff are highly trained in data collection and all data provided is anonymised prior to analysis, in keeping with best practice within the survey research industry.”
