From today ( 9 Feb 2026), passengers on TFI Local Link Mayo’s regular services can pay their fares using contactless payment options, including debit and credit cards, as well as mobile wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Successful rollout of the new contactless systemThe National Transport Authority has confirmed the successful rollout of the new system, following the successful results of the initial pilot in Cavan and Monaghan and the more recent introduction of contactless payments on TFI Local Link services in Tipperary, Laois and Offaly.
Contactless payments will be accepted for single-journey fares, while daily and weekly products will continue to be available via the Leap website and the TFI Leap Top‑up App. Passengers may also continue to pay using TFI Leap cards and cash, and Free Travel Cards remain valid on all eligible services.
This upgrade is part of the NTA’s wider programme to modernise fare payment systems nationally, improving accessibility and enhancing the overall passenger experience, particularly for communities in rural and regional areas.
Edmund Betagh, TFI Local Link Programme Manager at the NTA, welcomed the development, saying:
“Introducing contactless payments is a significant milestone for rural transport in Mayo. It gives passengers in smaller towns and villages more flexibility in how they pay and strengthens the role of TFI Local Link in connecting communities across the county.”
TFI Local Link Mayo General Manager Sarah Togher added:
“Contactless payments are an important step in modernising public transport in Mayo. By offering quick and convenient ways to pay, we’re making it easier for passengers to travel sustainably and access the services they need.”
