Fare Compliance
All passengers must have a valid ticket before boarding for their journey.
Fare evasion is a criminal offence and may result in:
- A €100 standard fare (penalty fine)
- for an unpaid fare, you may need to pay a fine of €100 plus your unpaid fare.
- A fine of up to €1,000 and a court appearance
Random spot checks are carried out across all TFI public transport services.
When Is a Penalty Fine Issued?
A €100 standard fare can be issued if you:
- Do not pay the correct fare for your age or journey length
- Use an incorrect or expired TFI Leap Card
- Use someone else’s personalised Leap Card
- Fail to present valid photo ID when required
- Use a forged, altered, or damaged ticket
- Do not present your ticket when requested
- Use a TFI Go ticket that is not activated, in date, or valid
Penalty fines apply
- You must Purchase a valid ticket for the journey you are making, before boarding the train, bus or tram
- The above fines apply to all passengers once you’ve boarded (or completed a journey) with:
- Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail on all routes (Intercity, Commuter and DART)
- Luas
- Bus Éireann
- Dublin Bus
- TFI Local Link
- All other TFI Public Transport operators
Reduced Fine available for early payment with Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann and Luas
- Dublin Bus
- If you pay the fine within 21 days, the fine is reduced to €50 (plus the standard unpaid fare)..
- Bus Éireann
- If you pay the fine within 21 days, the fine is reduced to €50 (plus the standard unpaid fare)..
- Luas
- If you pay the fine within 14 days, the fine is reduced to €45 (plus the standard unpaid fare)..
How to Pay a Penalty Fine
You can pay:
- On the spot to the inspector
- Online via the operator’s website
- In person, using cash or card
- By post
