Working at the Musée brought Phoenix full circle, in a way. As kids growing up in Versailles, they had rebelled against the oppressive French classicism they grew up around – the idea that culture belonged in a museum. Now, says Branco, “how is this allowed that we are all of a sudden treated like the institution?” But maybe the two institutions weren’t so disparate after all. Away from the exhibits at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, their studio became a holding space for a jumble of works: Dalí next to Medieval pieces and Lalanne sculptures. “The backstage of the museum is like a mashup,” says Deck. “It’s very pop in a way – like how we make music.”
Damien Dempsey is a passionate singer and songwriter – a rare gem of an artist. An ex-boxer with the soul of a poet. The beautifully shot documentary ‘Love Yourself Today’, released in 2021, follows a number of individuals who have been strongly influenced by Damien and unearths their stories of overcoming pain and finding solace in his music. The film successfully explains the Dublin singer-songwriter’s appeal by focusing on what his songs mean to fans. 2023 saw Dempsey’s 20-night residency at the Abbey Theatre, with his hugely successful debut show, Tales from the Holywell. The Conor Pearson-directed production was followed by a 14-date Irish tour and a support slot for The Saw Doctors at Manchester’s Castlefield Bowl. 2023 has also seen the first new music from Damien since 2018’s sublime Union album. Hope Calling is the first single from his as yet untitled 2024 new album and is released via Sony Ireland.
Paloma Faith’s ability to marry lavish, skyscraping pop fantasy with funny, plainspoken practicality is key to why she’s become one of the most successful British pop stars of her generation, with four platinum-certified albums (three of them double platinum) to her name and five Top 10 singles. Her comeback single, How You Leave a Man, is a zero-tolerance barn-burner about not sticking with the monotony and neglect of domesticity. Her ferocious sixth album, The Glorification of Sadness, is an epic, expansive, deeply personal record that turns over these feelings by taking a chronological journey through the cracking of an adult relationship, and with it a family. In recent years, Paloma has become a lifeline for many women who find solace in her unadulterated honesty as she shares her candid experiences of birth, babies, postnatal depression and the challenges of having your basic needs met as a woman and mother expected to sacrifice herself over everyone else. Paloma is in the final stages of writing a book about her experiences as well and her aims for the feminist movement.
Iveagh Gardens are located on Clonmel Street, off Harcourt Street in Dublin 2.
Access is by Clonmel Street, Hatch Street, and to the rear of the National Concert Hall on Earlsfort Terrace.
