The Free Travel Pass allows holders to travel free of charge on all public transport services (Bus Éireann, Dublin Bus, Go-Ahead Ireland, Iarnród Éireann, Luas and TFI Local Link) and many private commercial services. You can find a full list of all operators and routes where the Free Travel Pass is accepted on gov.ie. People are entitled to avail of this scheme if they are over 66 years old and living permanently in Ireland, or they receive Disability Allowance, Blind Pension, Carers Allowance or Invalidity Pension.
In addition, if you are aged 66 or over, the All Ireland Free Travel Scheme will entitle you to travel for free on transport services operating internally within Northern Ireland, using a Senior SmartPass card. Application forms (FTNI1) for Senior SmartPass cards are available at your local Social Welfare Office or at your local Citizens Information Centre.
If using a Paper – Free Travel Pass you must show this to the bus driver when when boarding the bus, or at the ticket office if travelling by train. If you are using a PSC Free Travel Card, please hold the card to the validator until you hear a beep or see the green light.
The Free Travel Scheme is administered by the Department of the Employment Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP) and all queries about the scheme should be directed to the Department by emailing freetravelqueries@welfare.ie or calling 071 915 7100.
More details on the Free Travel Scheme can be found on their website.
