The “Prepare Me AsIAm” provides helpful tools including how-to videos to assist Autistic people using public transport services.
The National Transport Authority (NTA) and Ireland’s Autism Charity, AsIAm, have re-launched a campaign to promote the “Prepare Me AsIAm for Public Transport” initiative. This aims to enhance accessibility and ease of use for Autistic people and their families across the Transport for Ireland Network.
It is estimated that at least 1 in 20 children in school today are Autistic, with shifting demographics also seeing a generation of identified Autistic people age out of school and more adults access Autism diagnosis. Access to public transport is key for many Autistic people and central to supporting independence, autonomy and access to the workplace. The Government’s Autism Innovation Strategy commits to addressing barriers which can prevent Autistic people from having the same chance to access or have a positive experience using public transport.
The “Prepare Me AsIAm for Public Transport” campaign aims to provide helpful tools, which include how-to videos and activity packs, to Autistic people to help them navigate public transport in Ireland.
Adam Harris, CEO and founder of AsIAm states “Public transport can often present invisible barriers for many Autistic people, particularly due to sensory overload and uncertainty around what to expect. The ‘Prepare Me AsIAm for Public Transport’ initiative is about reducing that anxiety by giving individuals and families practical, accessible tools to plan their journeys with confidence. We are proud to partner with the NTA on this campaign, which represents another meaningful step towards a more inclusive and accessible Ireland for the autism community.”
Naomi Rooney, Transport Accessibility Manager for the NTA said: “The NTA is committed to ensuring our public transport system serves all passengers, including those in the Autistic community. The ‘Prepare Me As I Am’ initiative gives people support to navigate public transport services with more confidence, making a positive impact on so many lives.”
The initiative builds on the success of previous campaigns with As I Am, and ongoing efforts to enhance the transport accessibility across the Transport for Ireland Network.
