The National Transport Authority (NTA) has today submitted a planning application to Galway City Council for a new Park & Ride facility for the Galway Metropolitan Area, located at Bóthar na Ceapaí within the townlands of An Léana Bodhar and An Ceapach, Cnoc na Cathrach, Galway.

The proposed development

The proposed development represents a significant investment in sustainable transport for the city of Galway, one that aims to improve public transport access, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance walking and cycling connectivity for the inhabitants of west Galway.

176 parking spaces

The proposed facility will provide 176 parking spaces, including 17 electric vehicle (EV) charging bays, 17 future proofed EV bays, and nine accessible parking spaces for people with reduced mobility. The development will also feature four bus bays with covered passenger shelters and space for secure bicycle parking, supporting an array of multi-modal travel.

Access to the site will be facilitated through the relocation and redesign of the existing Bóthar na Ceapaí / Bóthar Dáileacháin an Iarthair roundabout, which will be moved approximately 11 metres west. A new western arm of the roundabout will provide direct entry to the Park & Ride facility.

Active travel infrastructure included

The scheme also includes upgraded active travel infrastructure to enhance safety and connectivity for cyclists, as well as two new pedestrian connections linking the site to existing footpaths near Knocknacarra Community Centre, improving access to local amenities.

The Bóthar na Ceapaí Park & Ride facility

The Bóthar na Ceapaí Park & Ride facility is located within easy reach of frequent bus services, and is also planned to be the terminus for new bus routes; 7 and 9A, which will be introduced as part of the BusConnects Galway Network Redesign, further strengthening public transport links for Galway’s western suburbs, the city centre and the wider metropolitan area.

NTA remains committed to delivering high‑quality, accessible and sustainable transport infrastructure that supports public transport use, reduces car dependency, and enhances the Galway Metropolitan Area’s transport network.
